When to Winterize Your Boat in Muskoka

The right window is mid-October to early November. Here is how to plan it and what happens if you wait too long.

In Muskoka, winterize and store your boat before the first sustained frost, which typically arrives in mid-October. The practical window for haul-out is October 1 through November 10. Booking before September 1 guarantees a preferred pickup date. Waiting past November puts the engine at risk of freeze damage in the water and limits available trailer slots at storage facilities.

When does Muskoka get its first frost?

The Huntsville area averages its first frost around October 5 to 10, though the specific date varies by year and location. Low-lying areas near water freeze earlier than hilltop properties. Frost does not immediately damage a boat, but it signals that sustained cold is close, and that is the relevant danger for engines and plumbing systems.

The water temperature in Muskoka lakes drops below 10 degrees Celsius in late September or early October, which significantly reduces the time you can safely run a raw-water cooled engine before thermostats and impellers behave unpredictably. Many experienced cottagers use the Thanksgiving long weekend (second Monday of October) as their informal deadline for haul-out.

What is the actual risk of waiting?

Two specific risks increase with a later haul-out. First, a hard frost can freeze any water remaining in the engine cooling system if the boat is in the water or stored but not yet winterized. Even one night below -5 degrees Celsius can crack an exhaust manifold or a water jacket. Engine repairs after a freeze commonly run $800 to $3,000 for a smaller outboard and $2,500 to $8,000 for an inboard or sterndrive.

Second, haul-out scheduling at marinas and by trailer operators gets compressed in late October and early November as everyone rushes to beat the same deadline. If you are relying on a marina crane or a pickup service, availability is tighter the later you wait. Some marinas in Muskoka close their crane operations by October 31 regardless of weather. Booking early gives you priority on the schedule.

What if I still use my boat in October?

Many Muskoka cottagers use their boats well into October, especially in warmer years. That is fine. The key is to have a firm haul-out date on the calendar and stick to it rather than waiting for a comfortable day to appear spontaneously. Book your pickup or haulout date in August or September, then keep using the boat until that date arrives.

If you plan to use the boat past Canadian Thanksgiving, talk to your winterization provider in advance about the latest date they can guarantee a haul-out run to your area. Muskoka Storage's latest confirmed pickup dates depend on road and dock conditions; we publish the cutoff date for each zone in September each year.

Is it okay to winterize and then use the boat again?

Not ideal. Once the engine is fogged with oil and run dry, restarting it without redoing the flush can push stale water back through the system. If you need to use the boat after a winterization appointment has been booked, let us know. We schedule winterization on pickup day, so if you're using the boat right up to haul-out, the timing works.

When should I book a pickup or haul-out?

Book in August for a first-choice October date. Early booking also qualifies for our pre-season discount on shrink wrap. By September 15, the most desirable pickup slots on Lake Rosseau, Lake Joseph, and the more distant Lake of Bays locations are typically full. Zone 1 (Huntsville, Baysville) has more flexibility but still fills quickly once the season starts.

Muskoka Storage publishes the full pickup schedule by zone on the reservation page. Select your zone and preferred dates when you reserve. We confirm your specific pickup day within 48 hours.

When does the season reopen in spring?

Spring returns in Muskoka start in late April, once ice-out is confirmed on the relevant lake. The Huntsville-area lakes (Fairy, Vernon, Peninsula) typically ice out between April 15 and April 25. The larger and deeper lakes (Muskoka, Rosseau, Joseph) follow a week or so later. Lake of Bays east arm can hold ice into early May in a cold year.

We contact every stored boat owner in March with a spring return window. You confirm your preferred date and we deliver to your dock or marina. See the pickup and dropoff guide for how the spring return works in detail.
