Shrink Wrap vs Canvas Cover for Boat Storage

Two options for covering your boat through a Muskoka winter. Here is what each costs, what each protects against, and which one we recommend.

For outdoor winter storage in Muskoka, shrink wrap is the better choice for most boats. It seals completely against moisture and snow, costs less upfront than a quality custom canvas, and requires no fitting or storage of the cover itself in the off-season. A fitted canvas makes sense for boats pulled in and out of the water regularly, or for boats stored in a garage or covered building where full weather sealing is less critical.

What is marine shrink wrap?

Marine shrink wrap is a polyethylene film applied over a PVC pipe support frame that is built to fit the specific hull. A heat gun draws the film tight so it conforms to the hull shape and leaves no loose areas where snow or water can collect. A ventilation strap is installed at the peak to allow moisture vapor to escape without letting rain or snow in. The result is a sealed, breathable envelope that stays tight through freeze-thaw cycles.

Professional marine shrink wrap uses 6 or 9 mil film. Muskoka Storage uses 9 mil on all boats for extra puncture and tear resistance through the winter. The wrap is cut off in spring and the film is collected for recycling.

What is a canvas cover?

A fitted canvas cover is a sewn cover made to a specific hull's measurements. Quality marine canvas uses 100% solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella or equivalent) or heavy-duty polyester coated fabric. A well-made fitted cover ties or snaps to cleats around the perimeter and has straps to secure it underneath the hull.

Canvas covers are reusable over many seasons if stored and cared for properly. They are more expensive upfront than a season of shrink wrap, but the cost amortizes over years of use. Off-season storage of the cover is the main logistical challenge.

How do the costs compare?

The table below compares the two options across the factors that matter most for outdoor Muskoka storage.

Which is better for Muskoka winters?

Muskoka gets significant snow accumulation from November through March, with freeze-thaw cycles that stress any cover repeatedly. A properly installed shrink wrap handles these conditions better than a canvas cover because the support frame prevents pooling and the seal is complete. A canvas cover without a center support pole or frame will sag under wet snow, which pools water against the deck or cockpit, and can remain frozen there for weeks.

For boats stored outdoors without additional shelter from the elements, shrink wrap is our recommendation. For boats stored in a garage, a covered trailer port, or under a permanent roof, a fitted canvas is a reasonable and cost-effective alternative because the weather exposure is controlled.

Does Muskoka Storage offer both options?

Yes. Shrink wrap is our primary cover service and includes the support frame, 9 mil film, and ventilation strap. We also offer tarp cover installation with a strapping kit for boats where the owner prefers a reusable cover. Custom canvas fabrication is not done in-house but we can connect you with a local canvas shop that does custom work for cottage country boats. See the Services page for full pricing on both options.

What is our money-back guarantee on shrink wrap?

If your shrink wrap tears, fails, or admits moisture through a defect in our installation before the end of the storage season, we re-wrap the boat at no charge. This applies to installation defects, not to damage caused by falling branches or third-party contact. The guarantee is our quality commitment and is included in the price of every wrap we install.

Is shrink wrap environmentally harmful?

Shrink wrap is single-use polyethylene. The environmental impact is a fair concern. We collect the removed wrap in spring and send it to a film recycling facility. In Ontario, marine shrink wrap is recyclable through commercial film recyclers, though not through residential curbside programs. The wrap should never go to landfill when recycling is available. We handle this collection as part of the spring commissioning service.
